Filipinos in UAE to start weeklong Independence Day celebration Friday

MANILA, Philippines - Filipinos in Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) started Friday week-long activities to mark the 110th Philippine Independence Day. Online news site Khaleej Times reported that a tree-planting was to kick off the activities at 6 a.m. Abu Dhabi time (10 a.m. Manila time), at the corner of Al Salam and Corniche Streets. Philippine Consul-General Noel Sarvigon said the tree-planting ceremony will mark the contribution of the Filipino community to the preservation of the environment of the UAE. Sarvigon said this was also meant to be an expression of gratitude for providing employment to some 304,000 Filipinos. Alpha Phi Omega Emarat 21 is spearheading the tree-planting activity with the support of other Filipino organizations in Abu Dhabi. Also on Friday, the Abu Dhabi Filipino Bowling Club will hold the Ambassador's Cup at the Khalifa Bowling Centre. Proceeds of the event will go to the Philippine Overseas Labor Office and a children's foundation. The Philippine Business Council in Abu Dhabi will conduct a Basic Entrepreneurship Seminar at the Philippine Embassy for interested overseas Filipinos. Dubbed Ang Negosyanteng Pinoy (Filipino Businessman), it will feature successful Filipino business people as speakers. More activities have been scheduled within the week, said Sarvigon. - GMANews.TV
