Vegetable prices go up one week after heavy rain

Prices of some vegetables went up in Metro Manila early Monday, a week after heavy rain from a low-pressure area battered parts of Luzon.

 

In Marikina City, some vendors at the Marikina City Public Market blamed transport costs for the hike, radio dzBB's Glen Juego reported.

 

The report said prices of sitaw (string beans) went up from P35 a kilo last week to P40 per kilo.

 

Ampalaya prices also went up from P25 to P40 per kilo, while prices of sili (chili) went up from P28 to P45 per kilo.

 

Even prices of kalabasa (squash) went up from P15 to P20 per kilo, the report said.

 

However, prices of other vegetables such as eggplants remained stable at P35 per kilo; upo at P30; and carrots at P65 per kilo. Onion prices also remained stable at P65 per kilo, and garlic at P95 per kilo.

 

Last week, a low-pressure area passing through Luzon brought heavy rain and flooding on Metro Manila and other parts of Luzon.

 

At least four people were killed in the wake of the heavy rain, even as many roads were rendered impassable to traffic. –KG, GMA News
