PNoy visits families in Muntinlupa evacuation center

President Benigno Aquino III on Wednesday visited an evacuation center in Muntinlupa and handed out relief goods to more than 800 families. Aquino was scheduled to visit some Metro Manila cities affected by the recent rains and flooding.

Aquino was accompanied by Cabinet members to the school-turned-evacuation center in Barangay Tunasan.  They were briefed on-site by personnel of the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD).

"Nakakagalak naman, hong, maski nasalanta tayo dito ay medyo buhay na buhay ang kalooban ninyo. Mukhang palaban tayo dito kaya okay na okay, ho, yan. Parang nagagaanan yung problema namin pag nakikita kayong ganyan," said Aquino to the evacuees.

The Twitter accounts of the Presidential Communications Development and Strategic Planning Office (PCDSPO) and PCDSPO Secretary Ramon Carandang detailed the President's visit to the evacuation center.

The National Disaster Risk Reduction Management Council (NDRRMC) on Tuesday reported Muntinlupa as one of the cities in the National Capital Region with widespread flooding.

In that same report, the disaster agency said more than 800,000 Filipinos were affected by the heavy rainfall and flooding caused by the southwest monsoon enhanced by tropical storm Haikui.

Carandang posted a picture of a flooded street in his Twitter account, captioning it with "Muntinlupa floods not fully receded."

Aquino's visit to the city is part of his scheduled visits to evacuation centers in three Metro Manila cities, the others being Marikina and Quezon Cities.

The recent heavy rains that affected Metro Manila as well as many parts of Luzon forced many residents to leave their homes and take shelter in evacuation centers.

On Tuesday, the floods prompted Malacañang to suspend classes and work for the day.

While the Palace called for a resumption of work in government offices Wednesday, many government agencies and local governments still canceled work for the day due to continued flooding. — DVM, GMA News
