Billboard owners urged to roll down ads amid 'Lawin' threat

Amid threats of possible rain from Tropical Storm Lawin (Jelawat), authorities requested billboard owners in Metro Manila Saturday to roll down their ads early. The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council said this was one of the preparedness measures taken in anticipation of Tropical Storm Lawin. "(We) instructed (the) Outdoor Advertising Association of the Philippines (OAAP) to roll down their billboards as precautionary measure regarding the possible effects of Tropical Storm Lawin," it said in its Saturday report. Metro Manila police have also been placed on alert for developments regarding Storm Lawin, it added. PAGASA forecaster Connie Dadivas earlier said Metro Manila may expect rain from Lawin starting this coming Wednesday. The NDRRMC, which went on red alert Friday, also said all local disaster risk reduction and management offices as well as volunteer groups are on alert status. It also said standby relief goods and family packs have been prepared, while police and military teams are on standby for potentially affected areas. As of Saturday, PAGASA said Signal No. 2 had been hoisted over Eastern Samar, and Signal No. 1 over Northern Samar, Western Samar, Leyte, and Sorsogon. — LBG, GMA News
