'Drunk' San Juan tanod in hot water for 3 hit-and-run incidents in one night

A barangay tanod (village watchman) of San Juan City is now in hot water after he figured in three hit-and-run road incidents in Manila Tuesday night.

The suspect, initially identified as Jose Santamaria, faces a string of charges for hitting three vehicles in Manila's Sampaloc district, radio dzBB reported Wednesday.

Santamaria, a watchman of Barangay Greenhills in San Juan City, also faces added charges after he was found driving an Asian utility vehicle with a red (government-issued) plate.

The first of three hit-and-run incidents occurred at about 10 p.m., when the Revo (SGH-809) driven by Santamaria hit a Kia Rio sedan at the corner of Don Quijote and P. Margal Streets.

Instead of stopping, Santamaria sped away from the incident, then hit a Galant-type sedan at Dimasalang Street. He also sped away from the scene.

He then hit a parked taxi along Laong Laan Street and sped away from the scene, but authorities caught up with him at M. dela Fuente Street.

The report said police initially found indications he was drunk at the time he figured in the hit-and-run incidents.

Investigators are considering preparing charges against Santamaria ranging from drunk driving to reckless imprudence resulting in damage to property. — ELR, GMA News
