Quiapo Church spruced for Nazarene feast, releases sked

The Quiapo Church in Manila, home of the image of the Black Nazarene, was spruced up Thursday for the coming Feast of the Black Nazarene on Jan. 9.

Officials of the church also released Thursday the schedule of activities for the yearly event, radio dzBB's Carlo Mateo reported.

Activities are to start on Jan. 7, Monday, with a procession of replicas from Quiapo Church, the report said.
The "pahalik," Mass and vigil are to be held the next day, Jan. 8, at the Quirino Grandstand in Manila.

On Jan. 9, the yearly procession to Quiapo Church will be held, while hourly Masses at Quiapo Church will be held.

Meanwhile, at least 3,000 police personnel from the National Capital Region Police Office will be deployed to Manila next week for the Feast of the Black Nazarene.

The NCRPO said the police will coordinate with local government and Church authorities in securing the devotees and the public, radio dzBB reported Thursday.

Millions of devotees are expected to flock to Manila in time for the Jan. 9 Feast of the Black Nazarene, whose image is believed to have miraculous powers.

But the report said the NCRPO appealed this early to devotees not to bring their children and valuables to areas where the activities are to be held.

It noted at least 700 people were injured during last year’s feast, which was marked by the longest procession that lasted more than 22 hours.

Last year’s festivities were also marked by the disruption of mobile phone signals in and around the Quiapo area due to what authorities claimed was a possible terrorist plot.

Earlier, the Manila Police District said it will coordinate with the Quiapo Church for security measures at next week’s festivities. —KG, GMA News
