Expecting heavy traffic, UST suspends classes on Jan. 9

Expecting heavy traffic around its campus, the University of Santo Tomas in Manila will suspend classes on Jan. 9, the Feast of the Black Nazarene.

The UST student council announced this in a post on its Twitter account, where it said the suspension applies to all levels.

"Please be informed that classes shall be suspended on Jan 9, 2013 in observance of the Feast of the Black Nazarene," it said.

It also posted an announcement that also cited the "foreseen traffic conditions near the university" on that day.

Millions of devotees are expected to start flocking to Manila this coming week for the yearly Feast of the Black Nazarene.

The devotees believe the image of the Black Nazarene, housed at the Quiapo Church in Manila, has miraculous powers.

Highlighting the festivities will be the yearly procession bringing back the image to Quiapo Church on Jan. 9.

The procession's route will include many areas in Manila's Sta. Cruz and Quiapo districts.

However, many devotees are also expected to attend the other activities, including a vigil at the Quirino Grandstand, on Tuesday night.  — ELR, GMA News
