Policeman shot dead in Malabon

Police are now tracking down a gang of men who shot dead a police officer in Malabon City early Thursday morning.

Malabon City police chief Senior Superintendent Ferdinand Ampil said the incident occurred at 6:45 a.m. at Barangay Taniong.

"Sa investigation, parang may hinihintay ang victim. Nilapitan siya ng tatlo hanggang limang tao. Walang altercation, binaril agad ang pulis (Our investigation showed the victim was waiting for someone when three to five men approached him then shot him without any provocation)," Ampil said in an interview on dzBB radio.

He identified the victim as PO2 Rolando Madronero Jr., 32, who he said was with the Malabon police but was since reassigned to the Metro Manila police.

Ampil, citing initial information, said the victim was not in uniform at the time he was shot.

A separate report on Radyo Mo Nationwide said Madronero died from his wounds, after sustaining two gunshot wounds in the head.

The shooting occurred despite an ongoing gun ban related to the coming May 13 elections.  — ELR, GMA News
