11-month-old child wounded by stray bullet in QC shooting

An 11-month-old child became the latest victim of stray bullets following a shooting incident near her home in Quezon City Monday night.

 

Police are tracking down the motorcycle-riding suspects who shot at the girl's father but hit her in the shoulder instead, radio dzBB's Allan Gatus reported.

 

The victim, initially identified as Marinela Salvatierra, was rushed to the Quirino Memorial Medical Center for treatment after being hit in the left shoulder.

 

While doctors have declared her out of danger, they had to remove a part of her skin that was burned by the bullet, and have her take antibiotics.

 

Police are verifying information the girl's father Manolito, a security guard, may have been the target of the suspects.

 

An initial investigation showed the incident occurred at about 8:30 p.m. near the victim's house at Unit 5, Bato-Bato Street in Batasan, Quezon City.

 

Manolito was not injured in the shooting.

 

Police said they are looking into the possibility Manolito was mistaken for a suspect in a separate shooting incident in the area two days earlier.

 

Other stray bullet victims

 

Only a week ago, a 17-year-old student was hit and wounded by a stray bullet in his house in Caloocan City.

 

John de Guzman Galang, a graduating high school student, was rushed to the East Avenue Medical Center in Quezon City after the bullet was lodged in his head, radio dzBB's Rodil Vega reported.

 

The report quoted John's mother as saying the household was asleep at the victim's house at Phase 8 in Bagong Silang when a shot rang out and John was seen holding his bloodied head.

 

Last January, seven-year-old Stephanie Nicole Ella was hit by a stray bullet while she was watching New Year fireworks outside her house in Caloocan City.

 

However, Stephanie Nicole died from her injuries the next day. Her death triggered public outrage and debates on gun control. — RSJ, GMA News
