MMDA chief: Number coding soon for vehicles with conduction stickers

The days of being exempted from the number coding scheme may be numbered for motorists whose vehicles have conduction stickers instead of license plates, the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority said Wednesday.

In a radio interview, MMDA chairman Francis Tolentino said the number coding will apply on these motorists, based on the last digit of the conduction stickers.

"Maglalabas kami ng regulation, kung anong ending ng conduction sticker, yan din magiging basis ng number coding" Tolentino told dzBB radio.

Tolentino said many motorists with conduction stickers instead of license plates had been enjoying an exemption from the number coding scheme.

He said he has discussed the matter with Land Transportation Office head Virginia Torres, and she agreed to it.

"Payag siya ... gusto rin niya maibsan ang problema sa trapik," he said.

For now, Tolentino said the MMDA's plan is to publish the regulation in newspapers, and start implementing it as early as 15 days after first publication.

The number coding scheme aims to lessen the number of vehicles in Metro Manila's major roads by banning vehicles from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., based on the last digits of their license plates.

Banned from Metro Manila's major roads from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. are vehicles with plate numbers ending in 1 and 2 on Mondays; 3 and 4 on Tuesdays; 5 and 6 on Wednesdays; 7 and 8 on Thursdays; and 9 and 0 on Fridays. — RSJ, GMA News
