Atty. Raymond Fortun contemplates quitting cases after his wife is shot

Atty. Raymond Fortun, whose wife, Carole, was shot in the head Thursday night, said he would let his family decide if he should quit his work for the his family's safety. "Hindi naman niya [ang aking may-bahay, ang may] kasalanan, and she has to be the one to pay for it... Dapat kung mayroon lang binaril, ako na lang sana," Fortun tearfully said in a GMA 7, “24 Oras” report. “And I just hope that if the decision of the family is to take a step back and not be involved in these cases for the safety and security of the family, sana maintindihan na lang ng mga tao," he added. Fortun's spouse is now in stable condition at the University of Perpetual Help Medical Center. Fortun believed his work was the reason for the shooting. Among his clients are the petitioners against the Aquino government's controversial Disbursement Acceleration Program (DAP). He also represents Angelito San Juan, who was killed in the May 31 blast at a Two Serendra condominium unit he had rented. Fortun is the younger brother of Atty. Sigrid Fortun, the lawyer for some members of the Ampatuan family who are currently being tried for the 2009 Maguindanao massacre. The Fortun brothers were also members of then-President Joseph Estrada's defense panel during the impeachment trial. According to a witness interviewed by GMA reporter Oscar Oida, two men on a motorcycle passed near Mrs. Fortun's car past 8 p.m. The victim, who had just attended Mass, was alighting from her vehicle when one of the motorcyclists shot her. The Las Piñas police has released a security-camera video of the shooting. The suspects, one of whom is seen wearing a crash helmet while the other suspect wears a ball cap with a sling bag over the shoulder, can be seen tailing Mrs. Fortun's car. "Malaki matutulong (ng CCTV video) kasi may description tayo kung ano ang suot ng tao, 'yung motor tapos 'yung strap ng bag. More or less ma-co-compare natin sa lahat ng pumasok na motorsiklo sa subdivision," said Las Piñas police chief senior superintendent Boyet Samala. — Marc Jayson Cayabyab/DVM, GMA News
