2,600 cops watch key areas in Manila on Labor Day; workers' Mass held in Quiapo

The Manila Police District has deployed 2,600 personnel to watch three key areas in Manila on Labor Day, a dzBB report said Thursday.

These areas include Chino Roces (Mendiola) Bridge near Malacañang and Liwasang Bonifacio.

Meanwhile, a Catholic Church official on Thursday noon led a concelebrated Mass for laborers at Quiapo Church in Manila, according to a separate dzBB report.

Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines Commission on the Laity director Bishop Jesse Mercado led the Mass, dzBB's Carlo Mateo reported.

The Mass was dubbed the "Concelebrated Mass for the Working People," according to the CBCP's National Secretariat for Social Action (NASSA).

“We certainly believe that these heroes, the farmers, fisher folks and laborers can be saints in their own ways as Catholic Laity through tirelessly struggling for a just and humane society according to the Gospel,” an article on NASSA's website quoted Fr. Erik Adoviso, minister of the Manila Archdiocese's Archdiocesan Ministry for Labor Concerns, as saying.

“Workers are human persons, who are created in the image and likeness of God. They deserve decent wages for decent living,” he added. — Joel Locsin/BM, GMA News
