Freak accident smashes biker’s head on concrete

A cyclist was killed after he was sandwiched between a tree and a jeepney in a freak accident in Antipolo City, a report from GMA's “24 Oras” said Thursday.

According to his wife Gloria, the victim identified as Fernando Garol suffered multiple broken bones while his head slammed into a gutter after the jeep, that was in reverse, hit him.

“Ginawa siyang palaman sa puno at sa jeep. 'Yung pinaka kanto ng jeep, basag 'yun. Bitin siya, hindi siya sumayad sa kalsada. 'Yung ulo niya humataw sa gutter,” Gloria said.

Gloria said the jeepney's driver Marcial Agbay was keeping in touch with the family as regards the incident. She, however, said the family would still pursue a case of reckless imprudence resulting in a homicide against Agbay.

Based on Metro Manila Development Authority records, there have been 1,127 deaths related to bicycles from 2005 to 2013.

The MMDA's Metro Manila Accident Reporting and Analysis System said this was three times the number of accidents involving vehicles with four wheels in the same period.

It also said the following cities had the most number of bicycle-related accidents in the said period:

Quezon City – 393
Manila – 132
Caloocan – 80
Makati – 69
Parañaque – 67

Meanwhile, the Families of Road Victims and Road Survivors group urged lawmakers to pass laws related to road safety and protection for cyclists.

“'Yung kasabihang kalahati ng katawan namin, ng mga kasama naming mga nagbibisikleta nasa hukay, halos buong katawan mo na nasa hukay basta magbisikleta ka. Talagang buwis buhay. Talagang isuko mo na sarili mo na hindi ka uuwi ng buhay,” said group secretary-general Erwin Paala. Andrei Medina/NB, GMA News
