‘Moderate to heavy rain’ expected as La Mesa Dam nears spilling level

(Updated 1:00 a.m. July 10)  There are no Public Storm Warning Signals over the country, but Typhoon Falcon will enhance the Southwest Monsoon, or Habagat, and bring moderate to occasionally heavy rains over Luzon and Visayas, especially in the western sections, PAGASA said Thursday night.

That rain may cause the La Mesa Dam to overflow into the Tullahan River, which could lead to flooding.

According to a report on "State of the Nation with Jessica Soho", the La Mesa Dam management is keeping an eye on the water level there, which was at 79.73 m as of 5 p.m.

If the rain continues, water could reach the spilling level of 80.15 m and make the Tullahan River break its banks.

"Kung magbago yung intensity ng rains at tumaas yung rate of increase, puwedeng tonight (umabot sa spilling level). It will depend on the rains that we will monitor by the hour," dam spokesman Teddy Angeles said in the report.

The Quezon City government has said it will implement forced evacuation once the La Mesa Dam reaches spilling level and the Tullahan River, which also flows through the cities of Malabon and Valenzuela, starts to swell.

According to the SONA report, some residents have already left homes along the river but others have chosen to stay behind.

"Hindi pa naman po mataas yung tubig eh," resident Myrna Lansa said in the report.

As of the late evening newscast "Saksi", the water level recorded at the dam was still at 79.73 m, although that does not mean that the water has not risen.
