MMDA to reopen Quezon Avenue-EDSA intersection

The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) on Sunday announced that it will implement a "big adjustment" to help ease traffic on EDSA.

"Ang big adjustment na later on gagawin ay ang opening ng Quezon Avenue intersection," MMDA assistant general manager for operations Emerson Carlos said during an interview over radio dzBB.

Carlos said that the MMDA will install traffic lights on the intersection to control the traffic flow in the area.

MMDA traffic engineering center head Neomi Recio said that based on the plan, the intersection will be opened for southbound vehicles coming from Quezon Avenue turning left to EDSA and northbound vehicles (heading toward Trinoma and SM North areas) coming from Quezon Avenue turning left to EDSA.

Vehicles coming from the Quezon City Circle going to Manila and vice versa will be prohibited from using the intersection, she said.

"Ang diretso sa ilalim (Quezon Avenue-EDSA underpass). Aalisin ang diretso sa taas," Rercio added.

She said traffic lights will be installed at the intersection to "limit" the movement of vehicles.

Recio said that the plan aims to ease traffic in the area.

She said that based on their data, at least 4,000 vehicles per hour are using the two U-turn slots under the  Quezon Avenue-EDSA flyover.

"Kasi nagkakaproblema tayo sa U-turn. Sobrang dami kasi...," she said.

Recio, meanwhile, said that it will take weeks before the MMDA can open the intersection.

She said it would take at least a week to install the traffic lights and more days are needed for them to remove some features at the intersection.

Last week, the Philippine National Police's Highway Patrol Group closed U-turn slots in front of SM North Edsa and Trinoma malls.

Vehicles that usually use the U-turn slots to get to the malls and North Avenue, are now forced to use a single U-turn slot under the Quezon Avenue flyover. —ALG, GMA News
