519 dead in vehicular accidents in Metro Manila in 2015

The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) on Thursday said it has recorded 95,615 traffic accidents in the National Capital Region (NCR) in 2015.

These accidents killed a 519 persons, injured 17,103 others and caused 77,993 cases of damage to property.

Bases on data released by the Metro Manila Accident Recording and Analysis System (MMRAS) report last year's figures is higher compared to the 90,258 vehicle accidents for the year 2014 which killed 418 persons, injured 16,665 others and caused 73,175 cases of damage to property.

MMRAS is a program is created and operated by the Road Safety Unit (RSU) of the MMDA-Traffic Discipline Office-Traffic Engineering Center (MMDA-TDO-TEC) in cooperation with the PNP Traffic Enforcement Unit (TEU).

MMRAS is mandated to compile and maintain an on-going database of Fatal, Non-Fatal Injury and Damage to Property road crashes, which can indicate areas that need safety improvements. The system will also allow the impact of improvement measures that needs to be monitored.

Of the overall number of traffic incidents, 36,011 or 37.66 percent occurred during the hours of darkness while the 59,604 or 62.33 percent occurred during daytime.

While most of the accidents occurred at daytime, fatal accidents are high during the night and wee hours of the morning.

- Motorcycles highest fatality rate

According to MMRAS, motorcycles topped the list of vehicles in Metro Manila with the most number of deaths and injuries from road accidents.

MMRAS report showed that motorcycles have the "highest fatality accident rate" with 262 involved, followed by trucks with 129 and cars with 125. For non-fatal incidents, motorcycles still have the highest rate at 11,620, followed by cars at 7,427, and public utility jeepneys (PUJs) at 2,161.

In terms of damage to property, cars have the highest rate at 83,077, followed by trucks at 15,737 and vans at 14,413.

Records showed that the number of registered motorcycles has steadily increased over the last three years.

The entry of cheap motorcycles in the country and the worsening traffic situation in Metro Manila are seen as the primary reasons for the high demand for motorcycles.

The Philippine National Police - Highway Patrol Group earlier came up with a report saying most road accidents happen because of undisciplined motorists, drunk driving and the use of mobile phones while driving.

Based on MMRAS data, the three main causes of accidents are human factor at 95,570, followed by poor road conditions at 15, and vehicle defect at 29.

It also showed that the highest number of road accidents happened during the month of December, adding that these were mainly caused by human error and vehicular defect.
