Baclaran clear after MMDA clearing ops

The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) on Friday morning conducted clearing operations along the sidewalks of Baclaran in Parañaque City, an Unang Balita report said.

Illegally parked vehicles along the 800 meter-service road from C. Rivera Street in Baclaran until the corner of EDSA were towed by the MMDA Anti-illegal Parking and Sidewalk Clearing Operations team, GMA News' Bernadette Reyes reported.

About 40 towing trucks were dispatched by the MMDA. All illegally parked vehicles and other forms of obstruction along the service road were removed.

Meanwhile, Baclaran which is also known to have illegal vendors along its sidewalks, was seen in a different light after the clearing operations.

According to MMDA Chairman Tim Orbos, they are planning to clear the whole stretch of the service road from Baclaran to Kalaw.

He also said they have talked to the stakeholders, including vendors and drivers.

The vendors' goods will not be confiscated. However, they need to move away from the roads, the report said.

Terminals in Baclaran will also be prohibited. Instead there will be a designated area for the loading and unloading of passengers.

The MMDA said that once the clearing operation is completed, motorists can expect a four-lane service road.

It added that they will be lenient every Wednesday and Sunday to give way to Catholic devotees in the area. —Marlly Rome Bondoc/KG, GMA News
