Man arrested on estafa charges claimed close ties with top gov’t officials

A man arrested on multiple estafa charges had claimed to have personal ties with President Rodrigo Duterte and other key government officials, the National Bureau of Investigation said.

In a press statement, NBI Director Dante Gierran identified the suspect as Lino Espinosa Lim Jr., who was arrested in Quezon City on June 16 after continued surveillance and monitoring.

Gierran said the suspect claimed to have close ties and connections with Duterte, Senate President Koko Pimental, and Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation President Alfredo Lim, among others.

He added that Lim, "through sweet and cunning words," convinced one victim to part with P14.5 million, supposedly for various government projects and an investment that would earn high interest rates.

Lim, however, kept on giving alibis and went into hiding when the victim followed up the projects.

Gierran said the NBI Special Action Unit (NBI-SAU) had a number of failed entrapment operations against Lim before his arrest in Quezon City.

Gierran noted that Lim also has outstanding arrest warrants for estafa in the cities of Mandaluyong and Parañaque.

Three other victims came forward and filed separate charges against Lim following his arrest. They said Lim collected a total of P10 million from them using the same method. — Joseph Tristan Roxas/BM, GMA News
