Police secure Eton Centris building as drunk security guard causes trouble

Police secured a building at Eton Centris in Quezon City early Monday morning after a troubled and armed security guard holed himself up inside one of its rooms.

Earlier reports said Cyberpod One was on lockdown, but Quezon City Police District (QCPD) director Chief Superintendent Guillermo Eleazar clarified that only the room where the security guard was holed up was on lockdown.

A radio dzBB report said the security guard was drunk.

Eleazar also clarified that the security guard did not fire his gun and run amok.

"Gusto kong linawin na walang amok, walang amok na nangyari. Hindi nagpaputok yon. Hindi nagpapaputok. Siya'y isang security guard na may problema at nagkulong siya sa isang maliit na kwarto," Eleazar said in an interview on dzBB.

"Yun ang ni-lockdown natin isang maliit na [kuwarto]... The building and then the rest...other public buildings tuluy-tuloy ang kanilang business, tuluy-tuloy ang kanilang trabaho dito," he added.

National Capital Region Police Office chief Director Oscar Albayalde told Unang Balita in an interview that the security guard was armed with a 9mm pistol and was holed up on the ground floor of the BPO building.

The incident was reported at around 5 a.m.

The QCPD said that the situation was already under control at past 7 a.m.

Eleazar said the security guard peacefully surrendered at past 8 a.m. after several minutes of negotiations.

The QCPD chief said that during negotiations, they sought the help of the security guard's family.

"We're trying to coordinate with him pati yung sa kanyang pamilya para masiguro na walang kapahamakan na mangyari sa kanya. Pero no damage to property has been made by him. Wala siyang nasaktan kaya nga't gusto natin panatilihin na maayos ang lugar na ito at tuluy-tuloy ang business sa area na 'yon," Eleazar said.

Eleazar also clarified that no hostage-taking occurred in the area. He added that they believe the security guard did not intend to hurt anyone.

"Walang hostage-taking, walang amok, hindi siya nagpaputok. Kumbaga yung sarili niya gusto niya lang mapag-isa dahil sa problema niya," he said.

"Wala naman tayong nakikita na problema na magagawa niya sa mga kasamahan niya," he added.

He said the security guard did not make any demands or ask for anything. —Marlly Rome C. Bondoc/BAP/ALG/KVD, GMA News
