Chemists cry foul over 'chemist' tag on drug suspect

The Integrated Chemists of the Philippines (ICP) on Wednesday called the attention of the the police for tagging the suspect in a drug-related case a "chemist."

"It was clear from the coverage that the person who was apprehended was NOT a chemist," the ICP said in a report on "24 Oras."

The group of registered chemists and chemical technicians said the man allegedly responsible for mixing illegal drugs with candies and chocolates should not be called a "chemist."

They were referring to the suspect, 23-year-old Jan Allen Ledesma, who was arrested last week. The police said the suspect is a 5th year Electronics and Communications Engineering (ECE) student.

The items the police seized from Ledesma's vehicle were marijuana compact grinder, five wooden pipes, a jar of marijuana oil, two containers of marijuana gummy bears and three containers of chocolate liquid with suspected marijuana.

"Incorrect use of the term damages this important profession and paints chemists as drug pushers and criminals," the chemists said. — Margaret Claire Layug/BAP, GMA News
