7 Navotas cops accused of extorting money from 'drug suspect' surrender

Seven Navotas policemen surrendered to the Philippine Natioal Police's (PNP) anti-scalawag task force on Saturday after being accused of extorting money from the family of an arrested drug suspect.

The suspects, who are all personnel of the Navotas police, were identified as Police Officers 1 Emmanuel Benedict Alojacin, Mark Ryan Mones, Christian Paul Bondoc and Jack Rennert Etcubañas and Police Officers 2 Jonnel Barocaboc, Jessrald Pacinio and Police Officer 3 Kenneth Loria.

The PNP's Counter Intelligence Task Force (CITF) said the policemen arrested two alleged drug suspects in an anti-drug operation in Barangay Longos, Malabon City on Friday morning.

Following the arrest, the policemen allegedly used one of the arrested persons' phone and called up his mother demanding P100,000 in exchange for his release.

The policemen also allegedly threatened to kill the alleged drug suspects.

The mother reported the policemen's extortion demand to the CITF on the same day.

The CITF set up an entrapment operation, but the policemen did not show up.

It said that the policemen's identities were confirmed in a follow-up operation with the help of the Northern Police District.

The policemen surrendered to the CITF around 6:30 p.m. on Saturday.

The CITF said charges are now being prepared against the seven policemen while the persons they arrested have been ordered released. —Erwin Colcol/ALG, GMA News
