Muslims celebrate Eid al-Adha in Luneta

Thousands of Muslims gathered at Rizal Park on Friday to celebrate Eid al-Adha, according to a report by Bernadette Reyes on Unang Balita.

After the morning prayers, the participants will receive food and gifts. It will also be followed by an imam's sermon, the report said.

Eid al-Adha or Festival of Sacrifice is a holy season of sacrifice and giving for Muslims.

Extending help to Muslims in Marawi and other conflict areas affected by the siege between the Maute group and Philippine government would be part of their sacrifice this year.

Macatanong Dibarosan, national president of the Philippine Muslim Students Association (PHIMSA) Alumni Association, said the fund they gathered will be given to the victims of the Marawi siege.

This celebration was symbolized by Abraham's sacrifice of his son Isaac to God but because of Abraham's obedience, God instead asked him to offer an animal in place of Isaac.

Eid al-Adha also marks the end of hajj or the yearly pilgrimage of Muslims to Mecca. —Akari Nakano/KG/KVD, GMA News
