Kulot laid to rest in Pasig

Fourteen-year-old Reynaldo "Kulot" de Guzman was laid to rest on Wednesday morning at the Pasig Public Cemetery.

From the wake in Cainta, Rizal, his remains were brought to the San Antonio Abad Parish in Barangay Maybunga, Pasig City for the 8 a.m. funeral Mass.

During the Mass, the priest offered prayers for victims of alleged extrajudicial killings as well as their families.

The funeral convoy then proceeded to the Pasig Public Cemetery.

The coffin was placed inside an apartment-type tomb.

Before the tomb was sealed, Eduardo Gabriel, De Guzman's father, said they still believe that the body in the coffin was Kulot's, noting that he and his wife Lina saw marks proving that the body was their son's.

He also said they will stop those who will try to take away from them the body of De Guzman that has now been laid to rest at the cemetery.

Staff of the Witness Protection Program of the Department of Justice were at the funeral.

The Gabriels were made to wear a bulletproof vest as part of the standard operating procedure of the WPP.

After the interment, the staff of DOJ's WPP brought De Guzman's parents to a safehouse.

De Guzman was the last known companion of Carl Angelo Arnaiz in the wee hours of August 18. Arnaiz was killed in an alleged shootout with Caloocan Police on C3 Road after he reportedly robbed taxi driver Tomas Bagcal. De Guzman's body was found in a creek in Gapan, Nueva Ecija days later with 30 stab wounds and his head wrapped in packaging tape.

The Philippine National Police, however, said DNA test result showed that the body fished out of the creek in Nueva Ecija is not De Guzman's.

Deputy Director General Fernando Mendez, deputy chief for operations of the PNP, said that buccal swabs were taken from De Guzman's parents.

Public Attorney's Office chief Attorney Persida Ascota, however, doubted the results of the DNA test, saying that it was the parents of De Guzman who identified the remains.

The family insisted the body is De Guzman's and proceeded with the burial on Wednesday. —With Marlly Rome Bondoc and Akari Nakano/KG, GMA News
