Duterte apologizes for ‘detached’ MRT3 train mishap

President Rodrigo Duterte apologized for the inconvenience caused by the uncoupling of a Metro Rail Transit Line 3 (MRT3) train car last week.

In a media interview in Davao City on Saturday, Duterte surmised that the incident may have been intentional.

"It would indicate sabotage or something did it intentionally. So maybe the connecting mechanisms there or equipment seems to be—hindi nila makita or it’s not there when it’s supposed to be there," he said.

Around 130 to 140 passengers were evacuated from the MRT car last Thursday morning after it detached from the rest of the train between the Buendia and Ayala stations.

The train's black box could not be found, leading the Department of Transportation to suspect sabotage.

"We offer no excuse, but apologies maybe to the public for the inconvenience caused," Duterte added.

After the Department of Transportation ended its contract with Busan Universal Rail Inc., the government now temporarily handles the maintenance for the MRT3.

Transportation Undersecretary Cesar Chavez has earlier said in a television interview that the government will solve the issues of the MRT3 "within three to six months." — Erwin Colcol/BM, GMA News
