Traffic officials to go after faulty PUVs starting Monday

Traffic officials will go after faulty public utility vehicles (PUVs) when the "Tanggal Bulok, Tanggal Usok" campaign starts on major roads in Metro Manila on Monday.

The campaign will be a "360-degree check of PUVs' roadworthiness," Inter-Agency Council on Traffic (i-ACT) Communications and Administrative Services Head Elmer Argano said in a text message.

"'Tanggal Bulok, Tanggal Usok' program is i-Act's kick-off campaign for 2018, in support of the government's PUV modernization program," he said.

According to Argano, the program will be launched on three major highways: EDSA, Commonwealth Avenue, and Marcos Highway.

"Tomorrow's activity will basically be a 'warning shot' to public utility motorists and operators to comply with roadworthy standards," he said.

"Because a day after, they shall be issued summons requesting explanation why their license and franchise should not be suspended or revoked," he added.

Launched earlier by the Department of Transportation (DOTr), the PUV modernization program seeks to modernize the vehicles plying the streets of the country.

Under the program, PUVs must be able to pass higher safety standards to be able to continue operating. — BM, GMA News
