Cager Mac Cardona faces raps for pawning ‘stolen’ SUV

Basketball player Mark Cardona is facing a complaint before the Pasay City Prosecutor's Office for allegedly pawning an SUV that he didn't own for P300,000.

The Subaru Forrester pawned to Michelle Flores was also on the Highway Patrol Group's list of stolen vehicles.

Superintendent Jonathan Calixto of the HPG's Task Force Limbas told GMA News Online that Flores surrendered the vehicle, with license plate NIR 780, last week.

Cardona reportedly used the SUV as a collateral for a P300,000 loan.

Flores told the police that on November 13, 2017, she met Cardona at Remington Hotel in Pasay City where the latter pawned the vehicle for P300,000.

She said Cardona  promised that he will pay the loan with 20 percent interest on November 30, 2017.

“Noong November 13 ay lumapit po ang aking kumare na nagsabi at nag-alok sa akin kung gusto ko raw tanggapin ang pagsasanla ni Mark Cardona ng isang sasakyang Subaru Forester sa halagang P300,000 at ito ay kaniyang tutubuan ng 20 percent hanggang sa araw ng November 30 o kanyang ibabalik na halaga ay P370,000,” Flores said in her affidavit which was shown by the HPG to reporters.

She said she took the offer and Cardona gave her a photocopy of the official receipt and certificate of registration of the vehicle and the keys.

Flores said she and Cardona executed a written agreement, which Cardona signed, as proof of the transaction.

On November 30, Bautista called Cardona to remind him of their agreement and asked him if he was ready to pay the loan and get the vehicle.

Cardona reportedly said that he still had no money.

She said Cardona told her to just use the vehicle but Bautista answered that it was not possible because the vehicle was not registered.

Cardona failed to produce the original copy of the registration documents when she asked for them.

Bautista then sought the help of a television show and a law firm to demand payment from Cardona but to no avail.

She said she just learned of the status of the vehicle when she went to the Land Transportation Office in Pasig City.

When she told Cardona about it, the latter got angry.

“Ipinaalam ko po sa kanya ang nalaman kong carnap ang nasabing sasakyan ngunit siya pa ang nagalit sa akin at minura pa niya ako sa pamamagitan ng pagpapadala ng text messages,” Bautista said in her affidavit.

It was at that time that she decided to seek the help of the HPG and surrender the vehicle.

Calixto said the vehicle was first reported missing or stolen by Jarwin Uy, who sold the vehicle to car dealers who apparently failed to pay.

GMA News Online sought comment from Cardona's agent Danny Espiritu but was told he has yet to talk to the basketball player as regards the matter.  —NB/RSJ, GMA News
