Police Senior Insp. Gerry Sunga, head of the Parañaque City Police Investigation department, said the suspect was arrested after a follow-up operation was conducted about 9 p.m. on Friday.

The suspect was identified as Dionesio Layson, 30, a former caretaker at the Manila Memorial Park.

He said the urn was already empty when he sold this to a junk shop in Barangay C.A.A. - B.F. International in Las Piñas City for P1,900.

Layson named his cohorts as "Louie" and "Marvin."

He claimed that his companions instructed him to sell the urn that was stolen from the mausoleum of the Cruz family at the Manila Memorial Park.

The suspect claimed that "Louie" told him to get human ash inside a cemetery to replace the missing ash in the urn so that they can claim the reward money offered by the Cruz family.

Meanwhile, a follow up operation is being conducted by the police against the two other suspects and to the owner of the junk shop where the urn was sold.

The Cruz family discovered that two urns were stolen from the mausoleum on Tuesday.

Maria "Pipie" Cruz was the Filipina investment banker who was reported missing in 2003. She was found dead inside a suitcase that was buried in an abandoned house in New Jersey after one year.

Pipie died due to anesthesia overdose as she underwent a medical procedure conducted by a fake doctor, Dean Faiello.

Faiello was arrested at a resort in Costa Rica where he fled to avoid being arrested.

A court ruled that the fake doctor was guilty of the crime in 2006. — BAP, GMA News
