Too high and too steep, footbridge at EDSA-NIA to be redesigned —MMDA

The Metro Manila Development Authority has deferred the opening of the recently constructed steep footbridge on EDSA to address the public's concerns over safety and redesign the structure.

MMDA spokesperson Celine Pialago said the agency would place a landing to give pedestrians a break from the dozens of steps going up and down.

“Wala ng exact date. Basta before this year ends,” Pialago told GMA News Online as regards the schedule of the footbridge's opening.

“This is to address the concerns of the public; na matarik po masyado ang bridge. Maglalagay po tayo ng second landing,” she added.

The footbridge, which will be lit by solar powered lights, was supposed to be opened to the public on Thursday, November 15.

Pialago has earlier said that the footbridge was safe and approved by engineers, but conceded that it is not for the elderly and persons with disabilities.

“It is not intended for senior citizens, PWDs (Persons with Disabilities). We identified this spot [for the footbridge because this is an accident prone area. Iyang baba na 'yan, pinipilit po ng mga pedestrian na tumawid diyan,” Pialago said in a previous interview.

Based on MMDA records, at least 10 pedestrians figure in accidents in the said area on a monthly basis. —NB, GMA News
