Investment scam suspect arrested by NBI-NCR in Pasay

National Bureau of Investigation–National Capital Region (NBI-NCR) Operatives arrested an investment scam suspect in an entrapment operation in Pasay City on Saturday.

According to John Consulta’s report on “24 Oras Weekend,” NBI investigators retrieved the P100,000 in marked money from the suspect, identified as John Carl Michael Luwalhati, when they arrested him in a 5-star hotel.

The marked money was given by the complainant to the 22-year-old suspect.

According to the complainant, the hardships brought by the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic as well as the promises made by the suspect led them to trust him.

The suspect promised the victims 20 percent interest per month should they invest a minimum of P100,000.

“‘Yung kanilang page meron nang 11,000 likes. It’s all about ‘yung stocks at saka real estate. ‘Yun ‘yung sinasabi niya na pinag lalaanan niya ng pera na nakukuha niya,” victim JM, not his real name, said.

“Pag dating ng April, May, and June, sunod-sunod ang pay-out. Pag dating ng July, doon na nagsimulang mag karoon ng delay,” he added.

The NBI discovered that the suspect has replaced his company logo and name thrice in his Facebook account. They also found that he did not have a permit from the Securities and Exchange Commission to accept investments.

“Inilalaro niya sa sugal o sa casino. Wala talagang investments,” said NBI Agent Henry Roxas Jr.

The suspect will face charges for estafa and violations of the Cybercrime Prevention Act. — Joahna Lei Casilao/DVM, GMA News
