Low-pressure area develops into tropical depression ‘Gener’

MANILA, Philippines – The low-pressure area that formed in the eastern portion of the country has developed into a tropical depression and had been codenamed “Gener," state weather forecasters said Friday. In its 11:30 a.m. weather advisory, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) said “Gener" was spotted 300 kilometers west northwest of Coron, Palawan. It said "Gener" packed maximum sustained winds of 55 kilometers per hour near its center and was moving west northwest at a speed of 11 kph. The weather disturbance is forecast to be 530 km west northwest of Coron by Saturday morning and 250 km south of Paracel Island on Sunday. No pubic storm warning signals has been raised yet, the same advisory said. Still, Pagasa said “Gener" is expected to enhance the southwest monsoon as well as bring rains over Southern Luzon and Western Visayas. Pagasa advised residents living in low-lying areas and near mountain slopes to take extra precaution for possible landslides and flashfloods. - Mark Merueñas, GMANews.TV
