DepEd allows localized suspension of classes in Metro

MANILA, Philippines - A day after floods hit Metro Manila, education officials in the metropolis gave local government and school officials a free hand Thursday on whether to suspend classes in their schools. Department of Education Metro Manila director Teresita Domalanta said it is now the call of local officials whose areas are still flooded or may be flooded due to high tide. "Regular classes today sa Metro Manila except Mozon Elementary School sa Malabon, merong baha doon, isang school lang identify nila. (Pero) kung meron pang lugar na medyo baha, localized suspension ito (There will be regular classes today in Metro Manila except in Mozon Elementary School in Malabon because of high tide. But in the case of other schools, we will adopt a localized suspension)," she said in an interview on dzBB radio. She said the DepEd will merely repeat any advisory of class suspensions from schools, once it receives reports from them. The Malabon City government announced before dawn Thursday the suspension of classes in all levels due to the threat of flooding from high tide. Malabon City public information officer Bong Padua said that aside from heavy rains early Thursday morning, they expected the high tide to raise water levels at 10 a.m. "Sa monitoring kasi namin mamaya mataas ang tide. At ngayon marami nang lumubog ... Ang lakas ng ulan dito karamihan sa amin lumulubog na (The high tide will come this morning. And it's raining very hard already)," he said. - GMANews.TV
