Bus operators back stiffer penalties on abusive drivers

MANILA, Philippines - Metro Manila-based bus operators backed over the weekend moves to impose stiffer penalties on abusive drivers of public utility buses. Integrated Metro Bus Operation Association (Imboa) head Claire dela Fuente said drivers already have a mentality of taking it easy because their employers would always bail them out. "Kailangan magkaroon ng mahigpit ang parusa sa driver. Kadalasan minsan hindi masyadong iniintindi ng mga driver kasi sasabihin nila tutubusin sila ng amo nila, yan ang nangyayari riyan (There should be stiffer penalties on drivers. In many cases the drivers disregard traffic rules because their employers would bail them out anyway)," she said in an interview on dzXL radio. While she did not specify any proposed penalty on drivers, she said there must be penalties that would make them (drivers) realize they are responsible for their actions. Last All Saints’ Day, a Fermina Express bus slammed into a Toyota Revo along the North Luzon Expressway in Pampanga, killing at least five people. On Oct. 21, a Joanna Jesh bus slammed a Mercedes Benz sedan along Epifanio delos Santos Avenue in Quezon City, causing an explosion and killing a doctor in the sedan. For his part, Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board chairman Thompson Lantion said he would let the bus operators talk among themselves on the details of such punishments. In the meantime, he said the LTFRB's main action against such drivers would be retraining. - GMANews.TV
