LTO to closely monitor cases of contracting cab drivers

MANILA, Philippines - With the Christmas shopping season nearing, the Land Transportation Office (LTO) will make surprise inspections of taxi bays at malls and amusement parks. In an interview on dzBB radio, LTO chief Alberto Suansing on Friday also gave his cell phone number for passengers to text and send their complaints against choosy and "contractual" taxi drivers. "Gagalugarin natin yan, ang mga malls. Katakot-takot ang reklamong natatanggap ko (We're going to inspect those malls. I've been receiving a lot of complaints)," Suansing said. The official said he can empathize with taxi passengers who are held "hostage" by contracting taxi drivers because he himself had already encountered one at the airport last week. He said passengers who encounter such abusive taxi drivers should send text messages to this number: 0918-9447951. "Patatawagan natin ang driver at may-ari ng sasakyan (We will summon the driver and operator of the taxi in question)," he said. In most cases, he said the erring driver will get off with a relatively light P500 fine, but will have his or her driver's license suspended for one month. After that one-month period, he added, the driver will have to attend a seminar on good driving behavior. - GMANews.TV
