Peace deal architect Manuel Yan dies


MANILA, Philippines - Former presidential peace process adviser Manuel Yan, who helped engineer peace efforts with secessionist rebels, died in a hospital in Pasig City at age 88 Thursday. Radio dzBB reported Friday that Yan died at The Medical City hospital, leaving behind children Sonny and Beverly, Roby and Sita, Egay and Mawie Aglipay, Mina, Joy, Raul and Lou. Yan was born Jan. 24, 1920, and entered the Philippine Military Academy after attending Arellano University in 1937. Among his notable achievements was engineering a peace pact with the Moro Islamic Liberation Front, which signed the agreement with government in 1996. He also served as Armed Forces chief of staff. After his retirement, he served as ambassador to Thailand, Indonesia and the United Kingdom, and was assigned as foreign affairs undersecretary. Yan served as presidential peace process adviser from 1992 to 2000. His remains lie in Santuario de San Jose, Greenhills in San Juan City. Burial will be at the Manila Memorial Park in Parañaque City on Sunday. - GMANews.TV
