Arroyo getting ready for visit to Egypt, Syria

MANILA, Philippines — President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo will leave next week for another foreign trip to Egypt and Syria in what Malacañang described as a “mission of peace and interfaith dialogue." Press Secretary Cerge Remonde said Saturday Mrs. Arroyo will leave on May 1 for a working visit in Cairo and a state visit to Damascus. “The President will embark on a mission of peace and interfaith dialogue," Remonde said on government-run dzRB radio. He indicated that Mrs. Arroyo may ask Egypt’s help in the government’s efforts to forge a peace agreement with the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF). In Cairo, he said Mrs. Arroyo will meet with Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak, with Egyptian businessmen for possible investments in the Philippines, and with the Filipino community. “This will be the first time after 30 years that a Philippine president will visit Egypt, considered one of the most influential Muslim countries in the world," Remonde noted. He said the last Philippine leader who visited Egypt was Ferdinand Marcos. From Cairo, Mrs. Arroyo will continue to Damascus in Syria for a state visit. He said the visit stemmed from an invitation by the Syrian government. In Syria, Mrs. Arroyo will meet with Syrian President Bashar Al-Assad and witness the signing of agreements. She will also address the People’s Assembly in Syria and attend a state dinner, then visit a container port run by Filipino firm ICTSI before returning to Manila. - GMANews.TV
