'Maring' brings rains to Luzon; 6 areas under signal 1

At least six areas were placed under Storm Signal No. 1 as tropical depression "Maring" brought rains to parts of Luzon Wednesday. The Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration said Maring was located 230 km west northwest of Dagupan City as of 4 a.m. Wednesday. Areas placed under Storm Signal No. 1 were Ilocos Sur, La Union, western Pangasinan, Zambales, Bataan, and Lubang Islands. "Luzon will experience occasional rains becoming frequent over the western sections which may trigger flashfloods and landslides. The rest of the country will have mostly cloudy skies with scattered rainshowers and thunderstorms," Pagasa said in its 5 a.m. bulletin. It added that moderate to strong winds blowing from the southwest to south will prevail over northern Luzon and coming from the southwest over the rest of Luzon and Visayas. Pagasa said Maring packed maximum winds of 55 kph near the center and was moving north northwest slowly. It is expected to be 300 km west northwest of Dagupan City Thursday morning, and 370 km west northwest of Dagupan City or 340 km west northwest of Vigan City Friday morning. By Saturday morning it is expected to be 400 km west northwest of Vigan City. "This disturbance is expected to enhance the southwest monsoon and bring occasional rains over central and southern Luzon," Pagasa said. Meanwhile, the National Disaster Coordinating Council (NDCC) said 95,760 people or 18,960 families were from 81 villages of two cities and 10 towns had been affected by the inclement weather. In its 11 p.m. Tuesday report, the NDCC said those affected were from Zambales, Bataan, Antique, Negros Occidental and Negros Oriental. At least 602 families or 2,405 people from Botolan town in Zambales were housed inside evacuation centers.
