Car explodes in Taguig City’s The Fort; 1 killed

(UPDATE 4 - 2:50 pm) A Honda Civic exploded at a mall inside The Fort Global City in Taguig City Tuesday afternoon killing the vehicle’s driver.
Authorities rush to the scene just seconds after the explosion, reports blogger Judd Sta. Maria who took this photo.
Authorities received a report on the incident past 12 noon, Police Officer 3 Dex Cabrera told GMA News.TV in a telephone interview. He said the blast took place on 11th Avenue in front of Serendra mall and Fully Booked bookstore. Chief Superintendent Leonardo Espina, Philippine National Police spokesman, identified the fatality as Remigio Tan, an owner of one of the stores in the said shopping mall. "May edad na raw ito. Nagmamaneho ng sasakyan. Ipaparada ang sasakyan malapit sa Serendra nang bigla na lang sumabog... pumutok habang pumaparada (The victim was already a senior. He was the driving the car, and was supposed to park the vehicle near Serendra when it suddenly exploded)," said Espina. Espina allayed fears that the explosion could be linked to terrorism, saying, "Ay hindi naman siguro (I don't think so). He was just a proprietor there. An entrepreneur. It's hard to conclude at this time." Authorities are still determining the cause of the explosion but investigators are focusing its probe on the car engine. "It appears in the initial investigation na tuluy-tuloy ang combustion sa engine (that combustion in the engine was non-stop)," said Chief Supt. Jaime Calunsod, Southern Police District director, in a television interview.

Blogger Judd Sta. Maria who witnessed the incident said he saw the car (with plate no. TNM-865) entering Serendra basement when the vehicle suddenly blew up. "I think the car was going down to the parking area," he said in an interview with a television station. "(W)e heard a loud explosion from our office at Bonifacio High Street. Within seconds, sirens were sounding off and security guards downstairs were rushing towards Serendra. We were curious, but were a little afraid, too; I quickly grabbed my camera and sprinted to that direction and behold, a car entering the Serendra basement parking was there up in smoke," said Sta. Maria in his blog, juddstamaria.com. - Mark Merueñas, TJ Dimacali, ARCS, GMANews.TV
