PAGASA: Tropical Depression ‘Agaton’ enters RP

Despite the prevailing El Niño, a tropical depression code-named "Agaton" has entered the Philippine area of responsibility on Wednesday morning, the state weather bureau said. In its 11 a.m. weather bulletin, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said cyclone Agaton was last spotted 1,000 kilometers east of Catarman, Northern Samar. PAGASA said cyclone Agaton — the first weather disturbance to enter the country this year —packed maximum sustained winds of 55 kph and is moving west northwest at 22 kph. Although it has already entered the Philippine area of responsibility, cyclone Agaton is "still far to affect any part of the country," according to PAGASA. The tropical depression is forecast to move 730 kilometers northeast of Catarman on Thursday morning, and is expected to be 800 kilometers northeast of Aparri, Cagayan province by Saturday morning, PAGASA said. No public storm signal warnings were raised due to the weather disturbance, but the National Disaster Coordinating Council (NDCC) issued an advisory on Wednesday morning directing local leaders to disseminate information on the cyclone. Earlier in the day, PAGASA said Agaton will have little effect on the country and is not likely to last long.
