Typhoon 'Paeng' claims first casualties


Two persons died after a flying sheet of galvanized iron fell on them in a low-lying town in Aurora province, the first confirmed casualties of super typhoon Paeng, police said Monday morning. Radio station dzBB reported that Jocelyn Biares, 28, died from injuries while her six-year-old son Ian, who was initially reported wounded, was also reported dead. The report quoted Aurora provincial police chief Sr. Supt. Teodoro Saclolo as saying that the typhoon had destroyed 40 percent of the houses in Biares' village. The incident took place in Barangay Dimaseset , Dilasag town, Aurora province, which Saclolo described as a low-lying area. Roofs of nearby structures were also ripped off, he added. In Metro Manila, Asian Spirit canceled at least three domestic flights due to "Paeng," including flights to Basco in Batanes; Baguio City; and San Fernando City in La Union. As this developed, the Regional Disaster Coordinating Council in Ilocos reported that at least 31 children were rescued from a children's center in Aringay town in La Union. Radio station dzXL quoted reports reaching the National Disaster Coordinating Council (NDCC) as indicating rescuers saved the children from floods that threatened the center. Also rescued were eight teenagers, nine adults and four kitchen staff of the International Summer Village at Barangay Samara, Arinag, La Union. In Isabela province where "Paeng" made landfall Sunday night, authorities opened Gate 1 of the Magat Dam in Isabela province to prevent water from overflowing. The opening of the dam affected least eight towns in the province, including Ramon, San Mateo, Cabatuan, Aurora, Luna, Burgos, Reina Mercedes, and Gamo. In northern Metro Manila, meanwhile, gutter-deep floods have affected many parts of Malabon City. - GMANews.TV
