FPJ's daughter wants a 'progressive', 'pro-people' MTRCB

The daughter of the late Fernando Poe Jr. and veteran actress Susan Roces on Thursday took her oath as the new chairperson of the Movie and Television Review and Classification Board (MTRCB). In an ambush interview after President Benigno Aquino III swore her into office, Mary Grace Poe Llamanzares said she wants a "progressive" film and television industry that will help boost the economy. "Ang gusto ko sanang magawa para sa kanila ay matulungan ang industriya ng telebisyon at pelikula na mas lalong maging progresibo para mas makatulong sa ekonomiya natin," Llamanzares said. (What I want to do is help the television and film industry to be more progressive so it can help the economy.) Llamanzares said she plans to make the industry more "progressive" by ensuring that the board is composed of at least 15 representatives from the industry as stated in the board's rules and regulations. "I would request the president that we be able to submit names that we think will serve the purpose of being an open-minded board, taking into consideration the welfare of those both in the industries as well as the welfare of the audience," she said. Llamanzares said she would be neither conservative nor liberal in her actions as the board's chief, saying she prefers to be known as a "makatao" (pro-people) chairperson. The MTRCB, an agency under the Office of the President, is responsible for rating television, film, and various other video-based media such as video tapes and discs. The board is composed of the chairman, vice-chairman and 30 board members, all of whom hold one-year terms of office. Llamanzares replaced Consoliza Laguardia as MTRCB chairperson.—Jam L.
