PNP to release mid-year 'bonus' soon

Here's something members of the 138,000-strong Philippine National Police could look forward to: the early release of their mid-year 'bonus.' In a statement released on Friday, PNP spokesman Chief Superintendent Agrimero Cruz Jr. said the bonus, which actually represents half of the mandated 13th-month pay and other cash benefits, will be distributed soon as the Budget Department releases the P1.45 billion appropriation to fund the financial package. "(Director General Raul) Bacalzo instructed the Directorate for Comptrollership and the Finance Service to expedite processing of the DBM appropriation and to release the mid-year bonus without delay as soon as funds are available," Cruz said. Director Rey Lañada, chief of the PNP director for comptrollership, said the other half of the 'bonus' will be given in December. In the same press statement, Lañada said the 3rd tranche of salary increase for policemen based on the Salary Standardization Law in accordance to Executive Order No. 40 signed by President Benigno Aquino III will be implemented next month. "The amended Salary Standardization Law provides a 50 percent pay hike spread over four years from 2008 thru 2012 for all national government personnel," the statement said. Come June 1, which is the start of the implementation of the wage hike, the lowest ranking policeman (Police Officer 1/PO1) will start receiving a monthly basic salary of P13,492, exclusive of allowances and non-cash benefits. — Suzette Dalumpines/RSJ, GMA News
