Weather: Tropical depression ‘Onyok’ enters PHL

An approaching tropical depression entered the Philippine area of responsibility late Monday afternoon and was codenamed Onyok. The Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said on its Twitter account that Onyok entered Philippine territory at 5 p.m. "As of 5:00 PM (Monday), the Tropical Depression East Northeast of Basco, Batanes has entered PAR and was named 'Onyok,'" PAGASA said. It added that as of 6 p.m., Onyok was estimated at 1,190 km east-northeast of Basco, Batanes. However, PAGASA earlier said "Onyok" is not likely to directly affect any part of the country or make landfall, although it will enhance the southwest monsoon. It also said parts of Luzon will experience rain for the next 24 hours. "The western sections of Northern and Central Luzon will experience mostly cloudy skies with scattered rainshowers and thunderstorms. The rest of the country will be partly cloudy to cloudy with isolated rainshowers or thunderstorms," PAGASA said in its 5 p.m. bulletin. It added light to moderate winds blowing from the northwest to west will prevail over Luzon, from southwest to west over Visayas and coming from the south to southwest over Mindanao. Also, it said the coastal waters throughout the archipelago will be slight to moderate. - KBK, GMA News
