The Puerto Princesa Underground River is among the top entries vying for the New 7 Wonders of Nature global campaign, and Filipinos are urged to keep voting as the search comes to a close in four days. Out of the 28 entries vying for the seven spots, the Underground River is in the top 10 finalists, said Bernard Weber, president and founder of New7Wonders. The other entries in the top 10 (in alphabetical order) are:
the Dead Sea in Israel, Jordan and Palestine; the Grand Canyon in the United States; the Great Barrier Reef in Australia; Halong Bay in Vietnam; Jieta Grotto in Lebanon; Jeju Island in South Korea; Komodo Island in Indonesia; Sundarbans in Bangladesh and India; and Vesuvius in Chinese Taipei. From among the top 10, seven are from Asian countries. "Clearly, Asian finalists are strong at this stage, reflecting the way the world is evolving east," Weber said in a statement. "At the same time, I know the actual top 7 will change in the coming days. We remain excited and intrigued to see who will emerge as the provisional New7Wonders of Nature on 11/11/11." The search for the New 7 Wonders of Nature started in 2009, where 77 entries were initially picked. Twenty-eight finalists were eventually selected and are now vying for the top seven spots. The public can vote online via the New7Wonders website or through SMS. Filipinos can vote for the Puerto Princesa Underground River by sending PPUR to 2861. Voting ends on Nov. 11, 2011. Celebs join campaign for Underground River In the remaining days before voting ends, different celebrities and personalities help promote the Puerto Princesa Underground River, which is the longest navigable underground river in the world. Among the personalities who are helping campaign for the Underground River are Ogie Alcasid, Dingdong Dantes, Rhian Ramos, Jim Paredes and Kate Torralba. Wunderground United, a group spearheaded by singer and songwriter Noel Cabangon, is actively campaigning for the Underground River to be part of the New 7 Wonders through concerts, school tours, and social media. Tunog Wunderground, a music festival in support of the Underground River, was launched in June this year and toured different universities in Metro Manila. On November 9, the group will hold a concert in Metrowalk in Pasig City, featuring artists like Radioactive Sago Project, Up Dharma Down, Rivermaya, Sabado Boys, and Sitti. On November 10, a day before voting ends, a culminating event will be held at the SM Mall of Asia Music Hall, featuring Noel Cabangon, Franco, Nina, and Aiza Seguerra. — RSJ, GMA News
