Former DOTC, PNP chief Leandro Mendoza in St. Luke's ICU after heart attack

Former Transportation Secretary Leandro Mendoza was in stable condition Sunday after suffering a heart attack in Batangas province Saturday afternoon.

Mendoza, who was also Philippine National Police (PNP) chief of former President Gloria Arroyo, was airlifted to the St. Luke's Medical Center in Taguig City where he remained at the critical care unit as of early Sunday, radio dzBB reported.

The report quoted Mendoza's close friend and former Transportation Undersecretary Thompson Lantion as saying Mendoza was singing at a birthday party at San Juan, Batangas at about 2:30 p.m. Saturday when he felt dizzy and appeared to collapse.

He is to remain under observation at the St. Luke's Medical Center for 24 to 48 hours more, the report added.

Mendoza had been ordered arrested by the Sandiganbayan for his involvement in the $329.48-million national broadband network contract with Chinese firm ZTE Inc.

But he posted a P30,000 bail even as he denied the allegations against him. — ELR, GMA News
