PAGASA: Low-pressure area nears Surigao, may bring rain to NCR

While it has little chance of becoming a cyclone, a low-pressure area still threatens to bring flash floods and landslides to parts of Bicol and Eastern Visayas Tuesday, state weather forecasters said.

 

The Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration also said the low-pressure area may bring rain to as far as Metro Manila.

 

"Ang circulation niya aabot sa atin sa Metro Manila; (may) scattered rain showers. Ang circulation niya malawak," PAGASA forecaster Buddy Javier said in an interview on dzBB radio.

 

However, he said the low-pressure area has little chance of becoming a cyclone as it approaches the Mindanao area.

 

Javier said their forecast models at present indicate the low-pressure area may dissolve before it can become a cyclone.

 

"Nag-o-organize pa lang ito. Palapit siya nang palapit pero hindi siya todo mabuo. Tingin namin sa models namin mawawala rin ito," he said.

 

PAGASA said that as of 2 a.m., the low-pressure area was estimated at 70 km east-northeast of Surigao City.

 

"Bicol region and Visayas will experience cloudy skies with scattered to widespread rain showers and thunderstorms which may trigger flash floods and landslides," it said in its 5 a.m. bulletin.

 

It added the eastern sections of Northern and Central Luzon, the rest of Southern Luzon and Mindanao will have mostly cloudy skies with scattered rain showers and thunderstorms.

 

The rest of Luzon will be partly cloudy to cloudy with isolated rain showers or thunderstorms, PAGASA added.

 

Meanwhile, PAGASA said moderate to strong winds blowing from the east to northeast will prevail over Luzon, and coming from the southeast to northeast over the rest of the country.

 

The coastal waters throughout the country will be moderate to rough, it added. –KG, GMA News
