NDRRMC: Amid heavy rains, boy killed in Samar; damage in Mindoro reaches P65M

As heavy rains battered several parts of the country earlier this week, an eight-year-old boy in Samar was killed and damage to property and agriculture in Mindoro reached P65.657 million, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) said.   On its 5:00 p.m. update on Thursday, the NDRRMC identified the fatality as Angelo Lobos Sergioof Barangay Zone 3 in San Roque, Northern Samar.   The boy drowned last Sunday but was found dead only last Tuesday, the NDRRMC said in a report posted on its website early on Friday.   On the other hand, Castro Advincula, a fisherman who was earlier reported missing in Tolosa, Leyte  was rescued alive. P65M damage   The NDRRMC said rains and floods caused more than P65 million in damage to property in Naujan town in Mindoro Oriental  alone, including:

• P28,347,392.90 damage in agriculture (affecting 628 farmers working on 1,229.5 hectares of land in 45 villages), and
• P37.3 million in infrastructure (including the provincial and village roads in 67 villages, road shoulders in four villages, bridge approaches, the Sitio San Miguel Bridge, and erosion in Gawad Kalinga Village Estrella).

  The NDRRMC also said rice fields in flooded areas of Capiz were affected, while the national highway in Sigma town was not passable to light vehicles.   In Negros Oriental, Buayahan Spillway and bamboo bridge at Balugo Banica River was impassable as of Wednesday.   4,000 families affected   The NDRRMC also said the rain from the LPA affected 4,003 families (or 17,578 people) in 170 villages in 17 towns and three cities in Southern Luzon and Western and Eastern Visayas.   Power was out in Sitio Lungos in Brgy. Sta. Rita in Calapan City in Mindoro.   Meanwhile, the following roads were reported to be impassable:

• Naujan: roads connecting Brgy Nagiba I, Andres Ilagan  and Nagiba 2 are not passable to light vehicles;
• Baco: roads in Brgy Burbuli, Brgy  Sta Cruz, Brgy Catwiran  I, Brgy Malapad, Brgy San Andres, Lumang Bayan and Brgy. Tabon-Tabon are not passable to all types of vehicles;
• SR JCT Minas Road  (km4-+300) is still passable;
• Calapan South Road (Km 24+750) is still passable, and
• Flooded sections along national roads in Mindoro Oriental and southern Mindoro district engineering Offices have subsided and now passable to all types of vehicles.
