DepEd: Classes to open June 4 in public schools; 200 school days set for SY 2012-13

School year 2012-2013 will start this June 4 and end on March 22, 2013 for students in public elementary and high schools, the Department of Education said Wednesday.

In a news release, the DepEd said the school year will have 200 school days, 180 days of which are non-negotiable student-teacher contact time.

"Private schools, on the other hand, may deviate from the school calendar. However, they are enjoined to not start earlier than June 4 and not later than the last day of August," the DepEd said in DepEd Order 26, according to a news release posted on the Official Gazette website.

Any deviation from the school calendar should be relayed to the DepEd.

The DepEd said the new school calendar synchronizes all events and teaching-learning activities to optimize the use of the prescribed 200 school days.

“We have also allotted five days for in-service training (INSET) break and for parent-teacher conference because these are also very important activities for our teachers and parents,” Luistro noted.

Missed school days

Under the DepEd's memo, schools may observe national, local celebrations and holidays provided that the total number of school days is maintained and that make-up classes are conducted to compensate for missed school days.

Luistro added school heads should be in school for 200 days and be on top of all school matters.
