SALNs show Villar still richest senator, Trillanes poorest

(Updated 8:27) With a net worth of more than P800 million, real estate magnate and Senator Manuel Villar remains the richest senator in the Philippines.   Senator Antonio Trillanes IV is still the poorest senator with almost P4 million, based on the statement of assets, liabilities and net worth (SALN) they submitted to the Senate.   Here are the 2011 versus 2010 net worth of senators based on their SALNs:

Net worth is the value of assets minus liabilities.   According to the Senate website, a senator receives P35,000 a month while the Senate President receives P40,000.   Under Presidential Decree 677, which amended Republic Act 3019 (Anti Graft and Corrupt Practices Act), all government employees are required to file their “true detailed and sworn statement of assets and liabilities, including a statement of the amounts and sources of his income, the amounts of his personal and family expenses and the amount of income taxes paid" each year.   The SALN became a hot topic in the Philippines after impeached Chief Justice Renato Corona was accused of not disclosing his SALN–among other offenses.   He allegedly undervalued his assets and did not declare others. He was also questioned why he did not declare the acquisition cost of his real estate properties and instead only declared their assessed and fair market values.   Nineteen senators declared the acquisition cost, along with the assessed and fair market values, of their real estate properties in their respective SALNs for 2011.
