Pasay City and 2 towns in Cavite and Zambales suspend classes

(Updated 11:20 a.m.) - Citing the threat of possible heavy rain, Pasay City on Wednesday suspended classes for Wednesday in public schools from the preschool to elementary levels.

Albert Paredes, chief of staff of Mayor Antonio Calixto, said the Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration had predicted rain for the day.

"Sa pag-iikot namin kanina, meron pa ring pag-ambon. At sinabi ng PAGASA na uulan 90 percent ng umaga hanggang mamayang hapon. Kaya nagsigurado na kami na maiwasan natin magkasakit ang kabataan, lalo ang musmos. Baka magkaroon ng dengue at iba pang sakit," he said in an interview on dzBB radio.

He said the class suspension for the day covers the preschool and elementary levels in public schools only.

Meanwhile, in Cavite, Rosario town Mayor Jose Ricafrente Jr. cited initial reports of a threat of floods on low-lying areas if the local river overflows.

"Huwag papasukin ang mga bata natin," he said in a separate interview on dzBB.

He said this covers all private and public schools at all levels. In Sta. Cruz, Zambales, Mayor Luisito Marty suspended classes from preschool to high school in public and private schools due to heavy rain, Sta. Cruz North District Elem. School principal Lourdes P. Soriano told GMA News.

On Tuesday, many local officials were criticized for failing to suspend classes early, when heavy rain pelted Metro Manila and neighboring provinces.
