PAGASA: 7 areas under storm signals as 'Gener' continues to threaten north Luzon

At least seven areas remained under storm signals as Tropical Storm Gener (Saola) continued to endanger extreme northern Luzon Monday morning, the Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration said.

In its 11 a.m. advisory, PAGASA said Gener maintained its strength, packing maximum sustained winds of 105 kph near the center and gustiness of up to 135 kph.

PAGASA forecaster Fernando Cada said their models show Gener may stay in Philippine territory until at least Thursday.

"Huwebes pa, bumagal ito, 11 kph ang galaw. Made-delay ang paglabas niya ng Philippine area of responsibility," Cada said in an interview on dzBB radio.

PAGASA said that as of 10 a.m., Gener was estimated at 360 km east northeast of Aparri, Cagayan or 290 km east southeast of Basco, Batanes.

Gener was moving in a north northwest direction at 11 kph and is forecast to be 210 km east northeast of Basco, Batanes Tuesday morning, and 340 km north of Basco, Batanes Wednesday morning.

By Thursday morning it is expected to be 530 km north northwest of Basco, Batanes or outside the Philippine area of responsibility (PAR).

Areas under Storm Signal No. 2 include:

  • Cagayan
  • Calayan
  • Babuyan
  • Batanes

Under Signal No. 1 are:

  • Isabela
  • Kalinga
  • Apayao

PAGASA warned Gener may enhance the southwest monsoon that will bring rain and moderate to strong winds over Luzon and Visayas, especially the western section.

It reminded residents in low-lying and mountainous areas to be alert against possible flash floods and landslides. Also, it reminded those living in coastal areas under storm signals to be alert against big waves or storm surges.

PAGASA estimated rainfall from 10 to 20 mm per hour (heavy to intense) within the 700-km diameter of Gener.

It also reminded fishing boats and other small seacrafts not to venture out into the Seaboards of Central and Southern Luzon, Visayas and eastern seaboard of Mindanao due to the combined effect of Gener and the southwest monsoon. — RSJ, GMA News
